Poker is one of the most popular gambling games played inside a casino. It is universally popular. In fact the term "poker face" is now added in the dictionaries. This face conceals emotions and bluffs opponents, making the betting of every poker game very thrilling.
Where did Poker originate?
The origin of Poker is believed to be from different games. Poker's first account was in Mississippi, particularly in its rivers. Because of that, it is also believed that Poker is a game developed by the cardsharps.
Why was it coined as Poker?
Literature cannot pinpoint the real roots of the word Poker. Although majority says that Poker came from the French word Pogue, Germans claim Poker is just the version of their Pochspiel, a German game. Also, other historians would say that Poker is from the Hindu word, Pukka.
Another explanation for the word poker is that it is a version of pickpocket slang, "poke." "Poke" is usually used by the Cardsharps of Mississippi who are said to develop the game just to relieve a chump from his jail. Because they wanted to conceal the slang among themselves, they added the letter r to the original word. Pick pockets then used poker as a jargon during conversation.
Others also suggest that word poker was derived from the magician's "hocus-pocus."
How was Poker played before?
By the year 1834, Jonathan Green first accounted Poker as a cheating game. According to him, Poker used only the face cards, aces and tens during the game. Thus, only 20 (twenty) cards out of the 52 (fifty two) cards in a deck are included. Two to Five players are then being dealt with five cards.
Poker was also regarded as an elitist card game that entertained the early 1900 aristocrats.
What is Poker at present?
From an original 20-card game, the game of Poker evolved to a 32-card game, then to the modern version of Poker which has a deck of 52 excluding from the count the two Jokers. When playing poker, the players bet on the value of their hands for the purpose of winning the pool. The pool refers to the pot formed by the money that is wagered. The basic form is called draw poker. To win, one must create the best combination of five cards. Possible combination, from highest to lowest value, are royal flush, straight flush, four of a kind, full house, flush, straight, three of a kind, two pair, pair, and high card.
